MINING - Public gain over public pain?

Source: Inquirer 08/14/2007

The struggle of the local communities, indigenous peoples, church organizations and other sectors against the mining industry has been a sustained but bitter one. Mining is private gain from public pain. We challenge the government to name one host community that became progressive because of mining.

Mining is not for archipelagic countries like the Philippines whose small size and configuration make their ecosystems very vulnerable to damage. Mining is a highly water-intensive industry which depletes precious fresh water and endangers water bodies and marine life with contamination.

Pidjanga notes: Salamat Jo for sharing the article. This is a real issue and as Mainitnon... we should know how real the mining problem is. We have the SIANA experience as I have blogged about it earlier here. If my calculations were correct, Mainit was loosing to SURICON and its partners $1 billion per year. That was just 25% of the gross estimate. Something must be done.
