Lake Pinamaloy, Don Carlos, Bukidnon

This is the beautiful Lake Pinamaloy of Don Carlos, Bukidnon - the hometown of my wife where we spent our 2008 Christmas holidays.

It is almost as small as Lake Mahukdam of Tubod.

As you can see, it is surrounded with beautiful trees. I asked my wife how did Don Carlos do that?

Their secret? All grade 5 and 3rd year high school students are REQUIRED to plant ONE TREE beside the lake and ensure that it grows well - a requirement for graduation!

I think we can do the same in Mainit. What do you think Pidjangas?

Some 400 members of the Mamanwa tribe are now on their second week of staging a “human barricade” along the highway of Taganito in Claver, Surigao del Norte, demanding their right to one percent royalty from the gross output of the operations of four mining firms there.

School Health for Young Pidjangas

A friend and former colleague, Dr. Elmer Soriano, now in Harvard Kennedy School of Government taking his MPA on Leadership for a Networked World, contacted me to include our hometown in an initiative that will tackle health in schools. It will utilize a School Health Index (http://www.cdc.gov/HealthyYouth/SHI/introduction.htm) which will hopefully inform a development of some guidelines for teachers and referral systems.

He said that the initiative has gotten woven into a broader initiative called School Health for 1 B Children with partners from other countries and other graduate students at Harvard and MIT. Check out www.schoolhealthforonebillion.org.

A Philippine team (from US and the Philippines) has shaped up and perhaps the time is ripe to move forward.

The objectives of this team are:
1. to mobilize school and community leaders in the Philippines to push for school health;
2. to improve health and education outcomes through school health;
3. to increase civic engagement and voluntarism among Filipinos and FilAms by developing more venues for purposeful action.

This is exciting and I am sure you Pidjangas are also excited for our Pidjanga youth.

Let me know your thoughts!

BZ gadjud!

Yes, your Pidjanga blogger has just got down from beautiful Baguio City. Met the young and very dynamic mayor who amazed me with his first hand knowledge of his city's statistics - of the 300t populace, 80t are students making him pronounce that Baguio's development priority should be education, 30t are koreans who are also studying english thus the marriage of education and tourism, and the many other laudable achievements of the city: Philippines Finest Police, Philippines Board and Bar Topnotchers, etc - all evidence-based figures that informs his city plan.

Kun-o kaha ini mahitabo sa ato mga opisyales sa Mainit? Jaon na siguro pero waya lamang kita mahibayo kay waya may makasulti dato!

Nankamo rakay magpa-igo pagsuta... ELEKSIYON na isab!
