(Glossogobius giuris) is a freshwater fish native to Mainit Lake. It is called “biya” in Tagalog and “white goby or tank goby” in English. The term “pidjanga” is also sometimes fondly used to refer to the Mainitnons, the people of the Municipality of Mainit, a town in Southern Philippines. This blog hopes to capture potentials of Migrants Pidjangas for the Development of our Town by attempting to document development issues, folk stories, and current concerns, about the Pidjanga — both the fish and the people.

Lotus, Water Lily or what?

These water-based flowering plants are very common in Mainit Lake.

Can you help me identify its name? Cheers!

The plant shown in the picture is water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) a South American native plant introduced in the Philippines as an ornamental plant. It has become of the most prolific non-native invasive species. The presence of Water Hyacinth disrupts all life on the water. They clog waterways preventing river travel, block irrigation canals, destroy rice fields, ruin fishing grounds. By shading the water, these plants deprived native aquatic plants of sunlight and animals of oxygenated water. As the mats decay, there is a sharp increase in nutrient levels in the water, which spark off algal growths that further reduces oxygen levels. So its profileration in Lake Mainit is not a good sign.
