Pidjanga

(Glossogobius giuris) is a freshwater fish native to Mainit Lake. It is called “biya” in Tagalog and “white goby or tank goby” in English. The term “pidjanga” is also sometimes fondly used to refer to the Mainitnons, the people of the Municipality of Mainit, a town in Southern Philippines. This blog hopes to capture potentials of Migrants Pidjangas for the Development of our Town by attempting to document development issues, folk stories, and current concerns, about the Pidjanga — both the fish and the people.

MDO Tree Planting - 16 Sep 2006

The moment is here. After 6 months of waiting, our Tree Planting Day has come, 16 September 2006... that is on Saturday!

We had been very succesful in our campaign, well, thanks to the numerous donors who selflessly shared their time and resources in helping save our dear Lake Mainit. Well, thanks too to the MDO members and local partners who labored hard for the success of this project. Mabuhay kayo! This is not actually for us... but for our children... for the next generations of Mainitnons who deserve to enjoy the beauty of our lake and our environment... preserved and increased in value!

As I have reported, we have reached the target of 250 tree sponsors within just few days of launching the project in April 2006. We have added 100 more trees, and by August 31, all of these were adopted. To date, we have already reached 371 sponsored trees, amounting P76,000.00 worth of financial pledge. Our treasurer has reported a total collection of P54,880.00 (jadton aya pa mahipadaya an bajda, paki-apas rakan kan Didik. TY!).

We will start the Tree Planting at around 3 o'clock in the afternoon with a blessing to be given by Fr. Roman Alaan, MSc. These will be held at the Mainit National High School (MNHS) grounds. The actual tree-planting will be headed by Forester Jerry Acero of SNCAT. The trees will be planted along the Panayakpan Area of Lake Mainit, covering around 2 kilometers of lakeshore.

Each of the Bangkal Tree (fresh water mangroove) will have a tree guard and name plate named after the sponsor. Here's a sampler:
