Pidjanga

(Glossogobius giuris) is a freshwater fish native to Mainit Lake. It is called “biya” in Tagalog and “white goby or tank goby” in English. The term “pidjanga” is also sometimes fondly used to refer to the Mainitnons, the people of the Municipality of Mainit, a town in Southern Philippines. This blog hopes to capture potentials of Migrants Pidjangas for the Development of our Town by attempting to document development issues, folk stories, and current concerns, about the Pidjanga — both the fish and the people.

Where can you find world-class waves that rival that of the world’s best surfing spots, the country’s largest marshland and fourth largest lake and a thousand-year-old city all in one region, within a few traveling hours from each other?

The Philippines’ 13th region, the CARAGA Administrative Region is home to Siargao, the country’s surfing capital; the Agusan Marsh, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the picturesque Lake Mainit where over 33 various kinds of species thrive; and the historic city of Butuan which claims to be first discovered by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
All these and more of CARAGA’s unspoiled natural beauty, world-class tourist attractions, rich history and distinct people are being unveiled to the public in a rare cultural-cum trade show at the "Philippines’ Best" in Intramuros, Manila. [READ MORE]

Botika nga Barangay is "one of the government’s major thrusts and priorities is ensuring continuous access to low-cost, but high quality medicines".

Side bet: Pidjanga Blog refers now to BnB as "Botika ng Barangay", and B&B as "Bed and Breakfast" accommodations for Pidjanga Tourists.

Free Google applications for Mainit?

Free Google applications for RP schools
Source: Good News Pilipinas
By Paul Darwin Garilao

The No.1 internet search provider is touring the Asia-Pacific region to promote innovative products and technologies that may be useful for schools.

In cooperation with De La Salle Philippines (DLSP) and Philippine Society of IT Educators, Google Inc. launched a talk for educators who came from different schools nationwide held at the DLSP Multi-Purpose Hall, 20th Floor Br. Andrew Building last Dec. 6.

Though most people associate Google with search engines, the company has been developing technologies and social networks that will be beneficial to any organization. Jeff Keltner, a global manager from Google, promoted the company's innovative products, particularly the Google Apps Education Edition.

Speaking to at least 70 educators, Keltner said the application makes the students, faculty, alumni, and staff share information and ideas more easily.

Pidjanga notes: Tana an ato mga iskuylahan sa Mainit, internet-based na sanan maka-avail nan mga innovative technological projects amo ra nan inin sa Google. I think it is really doable... it will just be a 1) recognition of the need by the Municipal Council together with the principals of the different schools, 2) backed up by the political will of the Mayor, and 3) strong technical and financial support of the Pidjanga community both here and abroad... kaya ini.

One product, one town: Local yet global

By Ronnel Domingo
Inquirer - Last updated 03:56am (Mla time) 03/11/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- What does it take to make P5,000 grow into P1.5 million?

Just 30 pairs of idle hands.

Until 1990, the wives of farmers and fishers in Tubigon town in Bohol used to sit out their days just waiting for their husbands to return from work. At times, some of them would get a chance to add to their families’ income by selling fish in the neighborhood.

But they never had a sustained means of earning money.

Then, in 1990, they were organized into the Tubigon Loomweavers Association.

We will miss you so much Dad!

Dear Pidjangas and Pidjanga Blog readers...

Please join me and my family in our grief on the loss of our Daddy, former mayor of Mainit, Surigao del Norte, Hilario "Yonie" Simchico Mosende, who joined our creator in His heavenly kingdom last night at 7:30PM in Mainit, Surigao del Norte. He died after 8 years of surviving stroke. Our youngest brother, John Karachi "Concon" Mosende, held his hands when Dad was spending his final moments on earth.

Through this blog, many times, I have requested your prayers for Dad. One of such was last year when he was about to be operated (here). For all of you who offered moments of silence for his recovery, our sincerest thanks!

It is very, very sad to loose him but each man has a mission on earth. Dad's mission is done.

I was very fortunate to be able to go home twice this month, most recently last week (I returned to Manila only last Sunday). I had my final heart-to-heart talk with him, and told him how he should be happy about his children, all professionals and doing great as family men. Even without fame, power and fortune, knowing that his children and grandchildren have bright futures is already a celebration... a mission accomplished!

I have shared several times that he is the man that who molded and taught me the love of God and love of country. My first prayers were taught by him. At a very young age, we already know that 6 o'clock in the evening is a a time for the Angelus and everyone should be in the house. Every child in the house, even those under 5, were required to recite the creed, the Our Father, the Hail Mary, Glory Be, and the Hail Holy Queen. We did not have television nor radio, so our entertainment was our post-supper program where he asks each of us to perform (recite, sing, dance, etc). In between or after the program, he will have his lectures or sharings... the day won't end without reminding us to be good Christians and help Mainit.

To honor him, we have named our youngest son after him. I also named our new boat "Commander Yonie".

We are finding strength in his sweet memories. One such memory is this photo. Daddy Yonie brought me to Manila Zoo when i was 3 years old.

He was Yonie to most Mainitnons and also Lalo to the family. He was Larry to most of his friends. He was commander to a number of followers, a Papa to many friends, and a very dear daddy, uncle, tito, mano, to all of us Mosendes.

We lost our idol, a very handsome and intelligent Pidjanga, but his memories and teachings will forever live in our hearts.

We plan to have his final rites on April 12 (Saturday), at the Mainit Cementery. Please let us know if you would be able to join us.

Salamat karadjaw!

Liveblogging in Mainit!

First of all... I wish all Pidjanga visitors, most expecially all Mainitnons and Surigaonons, a bountiful New Year... May your wishes all come true especially this 2007.

My family had a great and memorable vacation. Our two kids did not only see our bloved hometowns, they also had the chance of playing with our old folks and their cousins and titos and titas and pamangkins.

Yes, I've finally tried 3G connectivity in Mainit and I was succesful... here's my Mainit-based blogging experience via Globe 3G.
http://bedcon663.blogspot.com/

Well, that was using my phone to access BLOGSPOT directly.

With the help of Monmon (using K610i) and Nonong (Nokia N70) we were able to connect a PC to the internet. We did not have time to maximize the potential of our cellphones' PC Suite so we failed at increasing internet speed. I think that the fastest we achieved was 115.2 kbps.

Well, at least, 3G works in Mainit and that is GOOD NEWS!

Mabuhay an PIDJANGA!

Back to work tomorrow, 3 January 2006! I will blog Mainit photos during the evenings... hope you're looking forward to it!
