Pidjanga

(Glossogobius giuris) is a freshwater fish native to Mainit Lake. It is called “biya” in Tagalog and “white goby or tank goby” in English. The term “pidjanga” is also sometimes fondly used to refer to the Mainitnons, the people of the Municipality of Mainit, a town in Southern Philippines. This blog hopes to capture potentials of Migrants Pidjangas for the Development of our Town by attempting to document development issues, folk stories, and current concerns, about the Pidjanga — both the fish and the people.

Is Gamaw the threatened Philippine Duck?

A common sight around Lake Mainit are the flying wild ducks, locally known as gamaw. I've talked to the organizers of the Bird Watchers in the Candaba Swamps during the Panibagong Paraan exhibits in SM Megamall, and their head informed me that the endemic Philippine Duck or Anas luzonica (probably the gamaw) is already a threatened species. If gamaw is indeed the Philippine Duck, then let us help one another to preserve it while it is still numerous in Lake Mainit.

I have been passing by Lake Mainit for some time now and as an amateur bird watcher, I kept wondering if the Philippine Duck (Anas luzonica) thrives in the Lake Mainit waters. The Wild Bird Club of the Philippines survey done in June 19-25, 2004 did not include the Philippine duck but recorded other ducks such Wandering Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna arcuata) and Tufted Duck(Aythya fuligula)- the largest concentration of this migratory species so far in the Philippines. I would be happy to know if the species exist. Perhaps if a picture of gamaw can be taken then perhaps we may know for certain if it is the threatened Philippine duck.
