Pagusi (Nymphea sp.)

Pagusi or Water Lotus (Nymphea sp.) is very common in Mainit Lake.

The green mature fruits are edible (peanut-like) and are usually sold in the public markets.

This is Tinuya na Bisaya na Manok (Tinolang Manok) with Kalamunggay (Malunggay), Kapadjas (Papaya), and Ka-goko (Bell Pepper).

Not Mainit's specialty but one of our towns most important dish!

Kayape

These are Wild Rattan Fruits (locally known as Kayape) usually found in the hinterlands of Mainit and brought down to the poblacion by the native Mamanwas (Mainit's surviving indigenous people) in exchange of food or clothing.

Mainit Lake's Kalinawan River (Tubay, Agusan del Norte)

"Kalinawan" comes from the visayan word "linaw" meaning clear. Kalinawan river must have been named when it was still clean and clear. This recent photo (probably taken in 2005) shows the opposite. What does it mean?

An Mamalingay (The Fisherman)

The usual scene in the lakeshores of Mainit Lake - fishermen (mamalingay in Minainit) weaving the torn parts of their fishing nets.


The basic fishing equipments of most fishermen in Mainit.

Baroto (fishing boat/banca) - carved from tree trunks and usually without outriggers (katig). One will be amazed at how bouyant these boats are. Riding the baroto on your own requires a great sense of balance.
Baling - fish net with smaller netholes (picture 1, and on the shore in picture 2). Makuha an mga suloy, balolong, bugwan, luyab sanan iban na dagko na isda na mabaling.Pukot - fish net with bigger netholes (on the boat in picture 2). Makuha an dagko na pidjanga, gurami, tilapia, sanan isahay mga lambuyo, hayuan, etc.
Bingwit - Fish hooks. Pandagko na isda sama sa gingaw, kikilo, karpa, etc.
Bigjo - Fishing spear. Makuha isab an gingaw, kikilo, karpa sanan hayuan, pantat, kasili, etc.

Mabayod ang danaw kuman panahon nan habagat.

Indigenous Herbal Medicine: TAMOK

Some years back, I wrote about local medications (I posted it here last year) that my grandparents used to give me when I was young. One of these is a herbal drink containing a grass locally called tamok. I finally found one in Tagaytay. Can anyone research for its English and Scientific Name?

Welcome to Mainit, Surigao del Norte

Can you see the mighty pidjanga?

Yes, it's on the uppermost part of the Welcome to Mainit rotonda. It towers above the pear-shaped Mainit Lake, the coconut (perhaps symbolizing the agricultural character of our town), and the town's Official Seal.

Why is this so? Does this explain the very important role of the Pidjanga in the lives of Mainitnons? Can we ask the sculptor/artist that created this monument... the respected Rev. Stenio Labrador?

This sign is located in Sitio Sanghan, Brgy. Magsaysay (Poblacion Mainit). It's a crossroad of 4 major routes:
* Osmeña Boulevard (formerly Mainit-Malimono Road) - on the right.
* Rizal St. - near left.
* Mupas St. - left
* National Highway - back.

Miligoy (Carabao Grass)

Carabao grass (Minainit: MILIGOY!) is very common in our town. The side of our streets in Mainit is usually covered with Miligoy so as with our school's playing grounds. Our elementary and high school days are full of memories with these Miligoy grasses... from playing Five Ten and Combat to the afternoon marchings during the CAT trainings.

Our farm animals (usually carabaos and goats) do graze on these grasses in our iladjas (farm).

Sabaw sa Dragon

Pidjangas fondly call brewed (boiled) coffee as "sabaw sa dragon" (soup of a dragon) referring to the Red Dragon coffee brand which is popular (and affordable!) in Mindanao.

"Sabaw sa dragon" is usually served during wakes or election campaign gatherings. During these times, nescafe and other branded instant coffee are considered a luxury! (sa ako paminaw hehehe!)

Sitios of Mainit

Wikipedia says... "A sitio in the Philippines is a territorial enclave that forms part of a barangay, the location of which may be distant from the center of the barangay itself. During Spanish occupation, sitios were named to make a centralized government for municipalities through the barrio system now called barangay."

Glossogobius giuris

Is the Pidjanga (Glossogobius giuris) endemic to Lake Mainit or not?

Dili kuno...

But here's a 1990 document reflecting that Glossogobius giuris as one of the main species under Gobiidae which the Pidjanga belongs too. It is supported by several papers starting from Manacop of 1937.

Comment from MS Fisheries Student on Pidjanga and Janitor Fish

A UP MS Fisheries student provided a valuable comment about our Pidjanga and the Janitor Fish.

Thank you Ms Marianne... I will conduct a further research. I would appreciate if you could also send the 1953 Herre list. I have a 1937 Manacop list which we both can confirm the endemicity of Pidjanga. Zimm (pidjangaATgmailDOTcom)

Please take this suggestion in a constructive way.

I would like to correct the scientific name of pidjanga in Lake Mainit. The white goby or tank goby, Glossogobius giuris is not endemic in the country (you can browse the species information at www.fishbase.com). Pidjanga is a correct local name but the scientific name is questionable. Herre (1953) listed many of the endemic and native species of Lake Mainit. I can post the list of fish species cited by Herre (1953)if I have time.


Regarding janitor fish...

There is a high possibility that the janitor fish from the Agusan Marsh will spread to Lake Mainit. While the janitor fish is not yet spreading to the bountiful lake, I suggest that the concerned LGUs should regularly monitor the fish catch and be strict enough in enforcing ordinances/laws regulating the aquatic resources in the lake.

Lake Mainit Development Alliance (LMDA)

The Lake Mainit Development Alliance was organized last March 1999, through a Memorandum of Agreement among two provinces, eight municipalities and several national line agencies.

The Alliance was recognized by the Regional Development Council (RDC) per RDC Resolution No. 11, S. 1999.

Vision
Lake Mainit as a diverse ecosystem with safe and crystal clear waters surrounded by verdant mountains endowed with abundant natural resources which is an eco tourism destination sustainably managed by an empowered citizenry for economic development and environmetal protection.

Watershed Area : 87,072 has.
Aggregate Land Area :72,372 has.
Lake Surface : 14,700 has.
Shoreline : 50 km.
Maximum Depth : 223 m.
Mean Depth : 128 m.
Volume : 18.00 cu.km.
No. of Tributaries : 28 rivers
Outlet of the Lake : Kalinawan River
Length : 20 km.

Lake Mainit is reported to be the habitat of rare fish species: the puyo or climbing perch and gabot. The lake is very scenic and its water has remained generally clear and clean. Various points around it can be potential tourist attractions. Thus, in the Caraga Tourism Master Plan, the lake area is identified as a tourism subzone, mainly for adventure tourism and ecotourism.

Dried Pidjanga: P350 per kilo

Dried Pidjanga is a produce of the Magpayang Rural Farmers Producers Coooperative (MARUFAPCO) with the help of UMFI and FAO-PTSARRD. Dried pidjangas are currently sold in four outlets:
1. Ading's Store, Mainit Public Market, Mainit, Surigao del Norte,
2. Eva Macapagal Terminal, Pier Area, Surigao City,
3. Lovely Pasalubong Center and Souvenir Shop, Surigao City (Central District),
4. Maharlika Ferry Terminal, Lipata, Surigao City.

Whenever possible, MARIFAPCO joins national trade fairs such as those in the Mega Trade Hall of SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City held last June 6-11, 2006.
